Computer Animation Studios of Imagi International Holdings Ltd Shut Down
![]() |
I just heard a sad news in the animation industry where a Hong Kong animation studios behind the films such as TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) and Astro Boy has been shut down a few weeks ago. The major reason why their parent company took the decision is because it tries to recover from losses.
It is such a sad moments because that computer animation studios was already in the animation industry since 2000 (nearly 10 years). However, their success story came quite late where their major worldwide break is only in 2007 when they release its first feature movie which is TMNT. The turtle ninjas film managed to earn around $95.6 million worlwide. Well, I had to believe it since most of the reviews are very positive on this film. Not so great, but it still a good movie to watch. I remember the time when I was a hardcore fan of TMNT and pretend that I was Donatello during my childhood. This film really brings back the memory. However, for their second movie which is Astro Boy, unfortunately, the same history and success story of TMNT did not repeat. That film only made around $23 million worldwide. It is quite a very big question because Astro Boy is an icon in the comic, cartoon and animation world and has a very loyal and hardcore fans around the world. I think, instead of doing the 3D animation of Astro Boy, they should produce it in live action, real human movie because the current Astro Boy animation TV series is already good enough. To better understand the critical condition of that company, Imagi Studios also laid off around 350 of its staffs. For more detail news of the closure of the studios, you can read it here.
