‘Watchmen’ Movie Review: The Greatest Graphic Novel Adaptation
![]() |
Last week, my wife and I managed to watch the ‘Watchmen’ movie in cinema. This movie is directed by Zack Snyder based on a popular graphic novel created by the legendary Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Frankly speaking, I never read its comic or graphic novel version so I really don’t have any idea what the film is about except the setting is in 1985 and some group of people dressed up like superheroes. From what I heard, this is the greatest graphic novel in history. So basically, the story is about a group of superheroes wannabe or vigilantes that are already getting old, retired and live a normal human life again. But, since the murder of one of them, they were all in the cautious mode since they got the feeling that the assassin want to wipe out all the existing superheroes. Meaning to say, the high level conspiracy to ‘clean up’ the superheroes. Based from the poster above, from left is Walter Kovacs or known as Rorschach, the blue naked guy is Dr. Jon Osterman or popularly known as Doctor Manhattan. Near and below Dr Manhattan is Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias. Next is Nite Owl and his real name is Daniel Dreiberg. The only girl in the picture is Laurie Juspeczyk and her alter ego is Silk Spectre II. The last one is the key person to the whole story since he was the one who was murdered in the early scene. He is Edward Blake or famously known as The Comedian.
Below are what I feel about the movie:
1) There is large amount of blood used and there are some gore and stomachache scene. Some of the scenes are also disturbing especially the scene where Rorschach try to find the kidnapped girl and The Comedian shot the pregnant lady with his baby. Some scenes show the explosion of body and left the meat and blood everywhere at the place.
2) I enjoy the movie and I don’t feel like time passed by although it is a long movie (nearly 3 hours). But, there are also a lot of audiences that can’t wait to leave the hall although the film is not finish properly yet. I think not all people can enjoy a melodramatic superheroes story.
3) I like the opening sequence where they used slow motion technique accompany by the Country song.
4) Rorschach has the best one-liner in this movie: “I’m not locked up in here with you. You’re locked up in here with me!” This small guy is the really macho one in this movie.
5) The special effects are awesome and marvellous especially those that have Dr Manhattan scene.
6) Some scene are sexually disturbing especially the attempted rape scene by The Comedian to Silk Spectre and hooker shows her breasts and nipples in the public at the street.
I’m not sure to recommend this movie or not. It depends on the person. Some will love it and some will hate it and regret to watch it. Let’s see what is my wife comment
