“Avatar” sinks “Titanic” Worldwide Box-Office Record & 3D Movie Ticket Price
At last, Avatar finally manage to beat or “sink” the worldwide box-office record that was hold for so long by Titanic. Coincidentally, both films are directed by James Cameron. Previously, Titanic held the record with $1.843 billion and now Avatar is taking in $1.859 billion globally. And one more, Avatar manage to surpass it after just only 37 days in cinemas and theatres. That period is less than one month and a half. What a run!!! So, what da ya think of it?
Well, from my personal opinion, I don’t think that we can measure the true box-office success of that films by comparing the total amount the movie manage to take or collect in dollars. This is because we have to take into consideration from many different angles such as the different ticket price at that point of time, inflation rate, deficit and also the number of countries that show the movies. Furthermore, for Avatar movie, most of the audiences are watching the 3D version and the 3D movie ticket price is nearly double or at least more than half of the normal ticket price. For example, when I watched Avatar in Cathay Cineleisure Damansara last month, the normal couple ticket price is RM13 which consists of the “true” movie ticket price at RM10.60 and also the Duti Hiburan (is it Entertainment Tax?) at RM2.60. Wow!! Expensive tax! It is 25% of the original items price??!! Another most important item is the rental of the 3D spectacles and glasses which is RM5 each. That is nearly 40% of the normal ticket price. So, the total 3D movie ticket price is actually RM18 per person. And don’t forget, the normal ticket price in 2009 is nearly doubled than in 1997 when Titanic was shown. I remember paying just RM6 or RM8 to watch Titanic during that time. So, I think the better way to judge which movies is the real box-office is by looking at the number of tickets that are purchased or number of tickets sold and not the amount collection. Actually, for me both Titanic and Avatar are really great movies, but not ‘THAT’ great yet. The movie that I consider great right now is “The Prestige”. Well, who cares anyway. Let’s just focus on these two James Cameron’s babies for a moment. For more information regarding this Avatar Box-Office success, you can read it in here. |
