“Rojak!”, 15Malaysia Shorties from Suleiman Brothers use Open-Source Software

I just watched one of the fifteen shorties from 15Malaysia Short Film Project. The shorties titled “Rojak!” is so unique because it combines and mixes the live action with computer graphics. Some of the scenes are really breathtaking such as the “Peragut Rempit” scene. Kudos to the Suleiman Brothers consists of Jordan Suleiman and Mussadique Suleiman and also Pete Teo for successfully producing and directing this wonderful short film. One amazing thing is that, the Suleiman Brothers using open-source software for most of the time to produce this shorties.
They are using Linux as the main O.S (Operating System) in the computers, mobile phones and PDA. Two of the Linux-based apps that they used are Blender, a 3D software package and Syntheyes, for mixing the real footage with the virtual images. They used Syntheyes together with Adobe After Effects. I think the main reason they used the open-source software because of the budget since open-source is free. Just imagine, one copy of Maya is already costs around RM15, 000. Another benefit might be because open-source is more flexible to use and modify than the proprietary systems. If you would like to see the output of their usage of the open-source software, just watch the video below:
One more thing about this Suleiman Brothers is that, their production company named “Studio Voxel” was formed in 1999 and is based in Ampang. Their work that I like most is the “Arms Of Marianne” video song by Pete Teo. Now I knowww…. For your info, the organization behind 15Malaysia project is Packet One Networks which is the wireless broadband provider brand P1 (yer know, the one with the controversial “Potong” ads). No wonder there is also “Potong Saga” short film by Ho Yuhang. Currently, this P1 company is in close face-to-face broadband battle with TM (Telekom Malaysia). Anyway, just enjoy the show… |
