TM’s (Telekom Malaysia) IPTV face-off with Astro’s Pay-TV

Yesterday, I read something on The Star Online about the future battle for the content market between two big giant companies in Malaysia which are Astro (Astro All Asia Networks Plc) and TM (Telekom Malaysia). Soon, TM will roll out its IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) service product and this will be a real threat to Astro’s pay-TV product. It is expected to be somewhere in first quarter of 2010. So, will Astro “menggelabah puyuh” with this new giant competitor?
For your info, IPTV is something where the television content can be delivered interactively to our house by using the broadband connection. Yap, for example your famous Streamyx or P1 WiMAX service. I just remember, before this, there are quite a number of Astro’s competitors but they all have become dust or disappear mysteriously such as Mega TV and MiTV. One of the reasons are the lack of the attractive contents that Astro can provide to its customers such as the EPL (English Premier League) which is its cash cow. Currently, Astro holds the exclusive broadcast rights of EPL for 2007 to 2010 seasons. Who knows, maybe TM will be the next one for 2010 to 2013 seasons since they are very serious in “bolasepak” thing, rite? Just check what company is behind Liga Super, MyTeam, Piala FA, Manchester United Jelajah Asia etc. Another thing is, since IPTV is using that underground cable to deliver the broadband service to the house, there will be no more problem “Service is currently unavailable” when its raining like Astro. Imagine when watching CSI, and when Grissom just open his mouth and wanna tell you who is the killer, then its raining. Ayoo-yooo… Luckily, Astro will play it again and again and again. If you would like to know more, you can read it here. Who do you guys think will win in the next 10 years? For me, it depends on the price, content and quality of service. May the Force Be with the Best. |

Who ever is OK as long as they can provide good content + affordable price.
July 18th, 2009 at 1:17 pmso far Astro is the dominion of all mainstream channels. Could be the an MoU between SKMM, channel companies and Astro themselves tie a rope to allow only Astro as a ’sole-proprietor’ content provider. So how TM to break lose? One I can suggest TM to propose a ultimatum whether to stay with the monopoly or mainstream channels are opened up to all in-waiting-list content providers, you SKMM decides….
