3D Pictures Using Cross-Eyed Stereo Photography Technique

Okay, to tell the truth, I am a very fanatic fan of Virtual Reality stuff. Couple of weeks ago, I’ve found out one old technique that I’ve just discovered. So, I tried it but it didn’t achieve the same result as the example given. Very frustrating indeed. For the time being, let me keep the technique as a secret first until I’ve perfected it ;-)

For now, let me introduce you with one of the techniques to produce the 3D pictures which is called the Cross-Eyed Viewing technique. Basically, it is a way of looking at the right and left photo separately for each eye (right eye looking at the right photo and left eye looking at the left photo) and doing it at the same time (simultaneously). At first, the images might be somewhat blur, multiply or out of focus. But if you continue to concentrate a little bit, at one point, both the right and left images will “combined” or “fused” thus creating a third virtual image between the right and left image. That third image will be in the 3D form. You can try this technique using the Ultraman pictures that I personally took for this purpose. How to take the picture is easy. First, I positioned the Ultraman (of course). Then I took the picture. Next, by moving the camera a little bit horizontally to the left, I took another picture. The distance that I moved is the same as the distance between my left eye and my right eye. The first picture will be the Right image and the second one will be the Left image. Here they are:

Personally, I think this is the second hardest technique to look at the 3D images. The first one will be stereograms. We will cover that in the next chapter guys ;-) This cross-eyed technique might cause a bit of eye strain and eye discomfort that can cause nausea or headaches because the eyes are forced to produce the 3D image out of the 2D images.

This article from Boris Starosta gives a good tutorial on how to view the 3d photo. Actually, the Ultraman picture that I took above is not so good since the distance of separation between the two pictures are quite big (calculation mistake). Next time, I’ll try to produce a better one. For the time being, let’s enjoy this perfect example below from Boris Starosta website.
